Why IV Sasi only wanted Mohanlal, not Mammootty to do Devasuram?
Devasuram, one of the most celebrated classic movie in Mollywood which was one of the all -time biggest success here as well. Mangalassery Neelakandan, Mohanlal’s character in this movie is undoubtedly one of the best ever in his career as well as in Malayalam Cinema as a whole. The movie is directed by the master director I V Sasi and scripted by Renjith. But there is a story behind the casting in this movie and it was quite interesting as well. Before Devasuram, Renjith had written a screenplay with the title Neelagiri keeping Mohanlal in mind to play the lead character. He went to IV Sasi with that script who was looking for a screenplay at that time. But when Renjith went to see IV Sasi, the director was looking for a screenplay for a Mammootty film, as the producer has got Mammootty’s dates for a movie. So he told Renjith to change the screenplay of Neelagiri in order to suit Mammootty. They did that movie with Mammootty in the lead and it became a box office disaster.
It made a gap between Mammootty and IV Sasi. Later when Renjith came to him with the screenplay of Devasuram, IV Sasi insisted that he will do this film only with Mohanlal in the lead as he wants to prove a point before Mammootty. Thus he cast Mohanlal and the rest is history. It was a great comeback from IV Sasi and Mohanlal again proved that he is the emperor of Mollywood without any doubt.
