Mohanlal dominates the list of Mollywood Industry Hits!
Indian Cinema has now witnessed the arrival of a new industry hit as Baahubali 2 had become the biggest ever grosser in Indian Cinema. Popular trade analysts suggest that Baahubali 2 can become the highest grosser in all major Indian Film Industries including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada if it goes like this. It is already the industry hit in Telugu. But they say that it is unlikely that Baahubali 2 become the highest grosser in Kerala, as Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan which had 90 crores gross from Kerala alone seems an unattainable target for Baahubali 2. When we look at the industry hits in Mollywood, we can find the supreme domination of Mohanlal here.
From the late 1980’s Mohanlal movies hold the record for industry hits in Mollywood. It was in the year 1986, through record breaking ‘Rajavinte Makan’, Mohanlal was established as the superstar of Mollywood. In the same year, Mohanlal created a history in Mollywood Box Office with 21 hits in a single year which includes Thalavattam, T.P Balagopalan M A, Gandhinagar 2nd Street etc.
The next year itself he gave another industry hit with Irupatham Noottand. Then came another industry hit in Mollywood in 1988 and it was Mohanlal’s Chithram. The record set by Chithram has been broken by Kilukkam in 1991 and there again it was Mohanlal. Manichithrathazhu in 1993, Aniyathipravu in 1997 (Kunchacko Boban), Chandralekha in 1997, Aaram Thamburan in 1997, Narasimham in 2000, Rajamanikyam in 2005 (Mammootty), Rasathanthram in 2006, Classmates in 2006 (Multi-Star), Twenty20 in 2008 (Multi-star), Drishyam in 2013 and Pulimurugan in 2016 are the other industry hits in Mollywood that followed. Out of the 15 industry hits in Mollywood after the year 1985, 11 of them were given by Mohanlal and it shows why Mollywood is called Mohanlalwood.
It was Mohanlal movies which become the first 2 crores, 3 crores, 5 crores, 10 crores, 15 crores, 20 crores, 30 crores, 50 crores, 75 crores, 100 crores, 150 crores grossers in Malayalam. In fact, his Pulimurugan is the only Malayalam Movie to touch the 100 crore mark.
