Xiaomi launches Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note 2 Prime, MIUI 7

Chinese Smartphone maker Xiaomi finally launched Redmi Note 2 and Redmi Note 2 Prime in China. The smartphone which comes under the phablet category is an upgraded version of its popular smartphone Redmi Note. Along with the devices, Xiaomi also introduced MIUI 7. MIUI 7 is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The main difference between Redmi Note 2 and Redmi Note 2 Prime lies in the LTE connectivity support. Redmi Note 2 is a 3G only device while Redmi Note 2 Prime gives 3G as well as 4G support. Redmi Note 2 comes with a 2GB RAM, 16/32 GB storage and a CPU with a speed of 2.0GHz. Redmi 2 Prime have only a 32 GB variant and have a slightly faster 2.2GHz CPU. Other specifications of both the devices are identical.

Both the devices have a 5.5 inch LCD display with 1920 x 1020 pixel resolution. The rear camera is 13MP with Samsung sensor and a 5- Element lens with f/2.2 aperture. The camera also has a faster phase detection autofocus. Coming to the front camera, it is a 5MP camera made by OmniVision. Both devices support dual SIMs. Devices powered by a 3060mAh battery with quick charge support.

Talking about the physical aspects of the device, Note 2 is lighter, slimmer and, of course, looks greater in design. The Redmi Note 2 has a dimension of 152x76x8.25mm and weighs 160 grams.

Xiaomi also unveiled MIUI 7, their custom ROM based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. It features 5 official themes and as before thousands of paid as well as free themes are available from theme showcase. It also has a new app called “Mi Roaming app” , which act as a virtual SIM when you are leaving the home country. It allows users to purchase data plans from Xiaomi when they are crossing home country. It’s not clear that this app is limited to China or available worldwide. Some reports say that the feature is available in China only. Another important feature is the face detection mode in the Gallery App. It can recognize faces and sort accordingly under People tab. Also, users are able to set videos to contacts. These videos will be played when the person calls the user. Another feature is kids mode, which restricts what contents accessible to kids.

The Redmi Note 2 16GB version is priced at 799 yuan (Rs 8,000 approximately) while 32Gb is priced at 899 yuan (Rs 9,000 approximately). The Note 2 Prime variant will be available at 999 yuan (Rs 10,000 approximately). The device would be launched on August 19th in India. After the launch, it would be the one of the best smartphone under 10k in India.
