Moral policing had nowadays become a very serious issue and people began to see everything with a negative mindset as well. We may have faced such issues in our personal lives as well. If a man travels with a woman or if a boy is seen with a girl, many people take it in the wrong way and start questioning the moral values. This film Uncle can be called a reaction against such fake moral policies.
The plot is all about 4 characters. One is the main lead played by Mammootty whose character name is Krishna Kumar aka KK. He happens to meet Sruthi, who is the daughter of his close friend Vijayan, while he was on his way back from Tamil Nadu to Calicut. As there was no bus because of a strike in Tamil Nadu, KK says that he will drop her at her house. But KK has the reputation of a womanizer among his friends and because of that Vijayan starts worrying about his daughter’s safety. Vijayan’s wife also starts worrying at some point. The story starts developing around this unusual situation in that family.
We have to say that, as a debutant director, Gireesh Damodar had made a decent movie which is engaging until the end. It has a social message in it related to moral policing and it also tells us that we don’t have to be prejudiced about others. The screenplay written by Joy Mathew was the strong point of this film as he presented plot situations in the most realistic way possible. There is a life in this movie and all the characters have an identity. Even the dialogues were very much convincing and real.
Mammootty’s performance has been great as usual. His body language was very convincing and we can see the actor in him in this movie. Karthika Muraleedharan who played Sruthi in this movie too did a fine job. She looked great and had given a matured performance. Others like Joy Mathew, Muthumani, KPAC Lalitha, Suresh Krishna, Ganapathy, Meghanathan, Kailash etc too done their part very convincingly.
DOP by Azhagappan had really captured the visual beauty and his frames helped a lot in creating the atmosphere in which this plot has developed. Bijipal’s songs were average but the background scoring was great. Shameer Muhamad, the editor of this flick, had done a fine as well. But a much-trimmed version could have done better for this film.
Uncle is a decent movie which will not disappoint you for sure. You can watch this flick with your family. The social message in it makes this movie worth a watch, apart from Mammootty’s performance. We can’t say this movie is better than Shutter, as Joy Mathew claimed it to be. But it is a good movie.
