Spyder Movie Review: An intriguing thriller saved by performances
The major release that graced the screens here in Kerala today was Telugu Super Star Mahesh Babu starrer movie titled Spyder, scripted and directed by A R Murugadoss. It was a Tamil- Telugu bilingual movie produced by N. V. Prasad and Tagore Madhu under the banner of NVR Cinema. Reliance Entertainment and Lycca Productions had distributed this movie all over the world. It is a spy thriller and Rakul Preeth had played the female lead character in it. It has been touted as the biggest budget movie ever in the career of Super Star Mahesh Babu.
The plot of this flick revolves around the intelligence officer named Shiva, who always want to stop a crime before it happens. It takes pleasure in serving people and saving them. But once he fails in stopping a crime, which results in the murder of two women. That makes him go after that murderer, who is known as Chudala, played by SJ Suriya. The flick revolves around the cat and mouse game between the hero and villain.
The film has many positives and at the same time has some major negatives as well. On the positive side, we can say that AR Murugadoss one again showed us that why he is been regarded as one of the best directors in India. Some sequences were mind-blowing and AR Murugadoss signature was present in those sequences. Scripting was decent as well. Especially, in the interval block and right after the interval block. The visuals from Santhosh Sivan has been awesome and we all know what he is capable of.
The major positive factor in the film is the performance of Mahesh Babu and SJ Suriya. Mahesh Babu had done a great job with his terrific screen presence and dialogue delivery style. But the one who stole the show was SJ Suriya who played the villain. He has been astonishing and he just lived as that psycho named Chudala on screen. His body language and expressions were just fantastic. Editing was great as it never let the pace of the movie to go down. Background music from Haris Jayaraj too can be added to the list of positives.
When it comes to negatives, Spyder once again showed us the inability of AR Murugadoss to present romance sequences convincingly. The romantic track pulled the film down whenever it seems that it will reach another level. The songs were misplaced and Rakul Preeth who played the female lead was only there to dance to songs. There was nothing for her in this movie other than smiling and dancing. Even though his background scoring was good, Haris Jayaraj was never in his zone when it comes to the songs of this movie. The VFX part too lacked the expected perfection. In such a big budget movie, the VFX have to be better as the audience expects big. Action sequences were good but the Peter Hein magic was no there in action sequences.
In total, Spyder can be touted as a complete Entertainer presented in a fresh manner. It was not like usual Tamil- Telugu action thrillers. The direction, technical aspects, and performances from lead actors made it a movie which worth a watch. It will never disappoint you for sure.
